The Appalachian Trail and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation
Area, near Shawnee is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the
Mid-Atlantic, with good reason. There are more than 60
hiking
trails traversing about 70,000 acres within minutes from the comfort of
Shawnee Village. Be sure to visit the Delaware Water Gap National
Recreation Area Information Center at Kittatinny Point. The
rangers and books on local flora, fauna, history and geology will enrich
your hiking experience.
Behind the information center is a spectacular view of the Water
Gap. The river flows by in a graceful curve, while the
towering heights of Pennsylvania's Mt. Minsi and New Jersey's Mt.
Tammany rise 1200 ft. above. Exposed rock strata display millions
of years of geological history.

Water Gap National Recreation Area - Bushkill-
This landscape provides a rich diversity of animals and birds. Whitetail
deer, beaver, black bear, and even river otter are some of the animals

for hawks and other raptors during their semi-annual migrations. This is
also one of the few locations in the East where bald eagles winter in
any abundance. Midmorning or late afternoon during January or February
are the best times to spot them.
