Shawnee's famous golf course
was designed and built in 1906 by A.W. Tillinghast

of Winged Foot and Baltusrol fame, and has hosted national tournaments
including the 1938 PGA Championship (Paul Runyan beat Sam Snead 8 & 7)
and the 1967 NCAA Championship (won by Hale Irwin). 24 of the 27
holes are on an island in the scenic Delaware River.
The
rich history of Shawnee Golf also includes show business greats who made
Shawnee their home. Fred Waring actually owned the Inn and golf
course for 30 years, and Jackie Gleason learned to play at Shawnee.
Gleason shot 143 his first time around, but fifteen months later was
breaking 80. Other entertainment luminaries who could be seen at
Shawnee include Ed Sullivan, Art Carney and Perry Como. Trivia
buffs should note that Arnold Palmer met his future wife Winnie at Shawnee
while playing a tournament.
Recent course improvements include new
computerized irrigation on tees and greens, paved cart paths around tees
and greens, new greens mowers, tee mowers and fairway mowers and
maintenance equipment totaling $750,000. For more information on tee times
and golf rates, visit the
Shawnee
Inn and Golf Resort website.
